BAKED TURKEY SANDWICH: This baked turkey sandwich is an option for those who like submarine sandwiches. I don’t get enough turkey outside of Thanksgiving so this is a recipe that helps at other times of the year.
2 cups (10 ounces) diced, cooked turkey
1/3 cup chopped pepperoni
3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
3/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
3/4 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped celery
1/3 cup mayonnaise
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
1 (16 ounce) loaf frozen bread dough, thawed
1 egg white
1 tablespoon water
Preheat oven to 375. Combine turkey, pepperoni, cheddar and mozzarella cheeses, onion, celery, mayonnaise, salt, and pepper in a bowl and mix thoroughly. On a floured surface, roll the bread dough into a rectangular shape. Approximately 14 x 11. Place the dough on a greased cookie sheet. Spread the filling lengthwise in the center, using only about the middle third of the rectangle, leaving about 1/2 inch on each end. Cut each side into 10 equal strips almost up to the filling. Enclose the filling by taking a strip from each side, bring them to the top, and twist them once together. Pinch them together. Do this with each of the 10 strips. Then pinch the top and bottom of each end together and fold them under. Mix the egg white and water together in a bowl and brush the mixture over the top of the entire loaf. Sprinkle with the sesame seed. Bake in the oven for 35 minutes or until golden brown. Let stand for 10 minutes before slicing. This recipe makes 10 servings.
If you prefer, the sesame seed is optional. You might also prefer to sprinkle the top lightly with Italian seasoning and/or finely shredded cheese. Also, I have cut a lot of salt out of my diet so I end up using more pepper than salt. Therefore, sometimes salt in any recipe seems to make things too salty. I would recommend using salt and pepper in amounts that fit YOUR taste.
