Hamburger Hot Dish

HAMBURGER HOT DISH:  This hamburger hot dish is closely related to what some people call Shepherd’s Pie.  It is a very basic recipe but one I always enjoy eating.



2 pounds hamburger
1/4 cup chopped onion
2 cans french style green beans
2 cans cream of celery soup
1 bag frozen tater tots
salt and pepper to taste



Preheat the oven to 350˚.  On the stovetop, brown hamburger with the chopped onion using salt and pepper to taste.  It is too difficult to name a specific measurement because I use less salt than most people would.  Drain the grease out of the pan.  Before adding the green beans, drain only one can of green beans, but leave the liquid in the second one.  Add both cans to the mixture.  Add celery soup and mix all of these ingredients together.  Put it in a baking dish.  Cover the hotdish completely with frozen tater tots.  Do not thaw them first.  Bake at 350˚ for 30 minutes or until tater tots are thawed, heated, and browned.

If you use a 5-quart pan to complete the stovetop steps, you can use the same pan in the oven.  Also, french style green beans are replaceable.  We’ve made this with one can of cut green beans and one can of sweet corn.  This can be made to your taste as long as you only drain the liquid off of one can of the vegetables.  The other ingredient that depends on your taste is the amount of tater tots used.  If you like more of the meat and vegetable mixture in the dish, use a generous one-layer amount of tater tots.  If, however, you like more potatoes added, make sure you push the first layer of tater tots into the meat mixture so the top layer is still in contact with the meat mixture.
